Claim
Social media posts on Facebook, X, and TikTok are widely sharing images. These images claim to show the current, physically deteriorated condition of detained Ethiopian politicians Christian Tadele and Yohannes Buayalew. The posts present these images as authentic and recent evidence of their current state in detention during the ongoing conflict in the Amhara region.
Verdict
The claim is false. MFC discovered that the image of Christian Tadele is completely AI-generated. Specifically, it features clear digital distortions and fails multiple AI detection tools. Meanwhile, the image of Yohannes Buayalew is real but highly misleading. That is because it dates back to at least December 2023. Furthermore, sharers have stripped it of its original context to falsely imply it is new evidence.

Investigation and Findings
Two images have been circulating widely on social media. They appear on Facebook (see links here, here, and here), X (see links here and here), and TikTok (see links here, here, here, and here). The posts present the images as authentic and current. In doing so, they imply the images reflect the politicians’ present physical condition in detention.
MFC has examined images of detained Ethiopian politicians Christian Tadele and Yohannes Buayalew. These images are circulating widely on Facebook, X, and TikTok. Each post makes a specific claim about the politicians’ current physical condition in detention. After careful analysis using AI detection tools and reverse image searches, our team finds the claims they make to be deceptive.
Who Are These Politicians?
Christian Tadele is a member of the Federal Parliament. Yohannes Buayalew is a member of the Amhara Regional State Council. Both are prominent figures associated with Amhara regional politics. Authorities arrested Christian on 4 August 2023. They arrested Yohannes on 15 August 2023. The Command Post in Bahir Dar carried out both arrests. Later, authorities transferred both men to Addis Ababa. Subsequently, they held them at Awash Arba, a military camp and detention center in the Afar Region.
These images have generated significant social media engagement. For instance, one TikTok account had more than 87,000 followers at the time of publication. That account’s post received over 28,000 views. Additionally, users shared it more than 1,600 times. Most viewers appeared unaware that one image is AI-generated. Others did not know that the other image is old.

Meanwhile, the posts were being shared in a specific context. That context is the ongoing armed conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and the Fano militia in the Amhara region. This is a sensitive topic. As a result, misleading imagery carries a heightened potential for harm.
Analysis of the Christian Tadele Image
The image showing Christian Tadele displays multiple visual characteristics consistent with AI-generated imagery. Some versions even depict both politicians side by side. Look closely at Christian’s left hand and fingers. The anatomy becomes highly distorted. Additionally, notice the unnatural smudging. The “dirt” and grime on both men’s clothes look like digital brush strokes. They do not resemble authentic grease, mud, or dust patterns. Real dirt settles into specific creases of worn workwear. This image lacks that authenticity. Furthermore, viewers can spot unnatural skin texture, an irregular facial expression, and inconsistent lighting across the subjects.
MFC then ran the image through three independent AI detection tools:
First, Hive Moderation confirmed a 99.9% probability of AI generation. That means the tool found virtually no chance the image came from a real camera.

Second, Deep AI Image Detector confirmed the image is highly likely to be AI-generated. This result independently supports the first tool’s finding.
Third, Hugging Face AI Detection independently returned a high probability of machine-generated content. Consequently, all three tools converged on the same conclusion: the image is not authentic.

Moreover, no credible media source has published this image as authentic. A reverse image search returned only social media posts sharing the same misleading claim. Consequently, no verifiable origin matches a real photograph of Christian Tadele.
Analysis of the Yohannes Buayalew Image
The second image shows Yohannes Buayalew with apparent signs of physical deterioration. Importantly, this is not a recent photograph. MFC traced the image online. We found it has been circulating since at least December 2023. That is over a year before the current round of posts surfaced.

Context
Christian Tadele is an outspoken member of the Ethiopian Federal Parliament. He is also an executive member of the opposition National Movement of Amhara (NaMA). Yohannes Buayalew is a prominent member of the Amhara Regional State Council. Both politicians are highly influential figures in Amhara regional politics. Historically, they have been sharp critics of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration. Specifically, they frequently condemn government military operations and call for leadership changes.
In August 2023, clashes escalated between federal forces and the regional Fano militia. Consequently, the federal government declared a six-month state of emergency in the Amhara region. Under the sweeping authority of this emergency decree, security forces arrested Christian Tadele on August 4, 2023. They arrested Yohannes Buayalew on August 15, 2023. The accusations included supporting the armed rebel group and trying to dismantle the government system by force. Notably, Christian Tadele held parliamentary immunity at the time of his initial detention. However, the House of Peoples’ Representatives officially voted to revoke his legislative immunity seven months later, in March 2024. That vote followed a formal request from judicial authorities.
This misinformation surfaced online against a volatile backdrop. Specifically, the ongoing armed conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and the Fano militia continues. Additionally, intense internet censorship shapes the information environment. Heavily restricted access to independent news compounds the problem. As a result, digital spaces have become battlegrounds for narrative control. Malicious actors weaponized the manipulated imagery. They exploited deep public concern regarding harsh conditions at military detention centers like Awash Arba, where the politicians have been held. Ultimately, these images stoke ethnic tensions and mobilize political outrage. They do so by presenting artificial visual “proof” of physical deterioration.
Conclusion
MFC finds both images to be FALSE as presented. First, the image of Christian Tadele is AI-generated. Multiple detection tools confirm this finding. Second, the image of Yohannes Buayalew is real but old. It dates to at least December 2023. Sharers are now circulating it without the original context. That context would allow viewers to assess its currency.
At the time this older photo first circulated, it attracted attention. It appeared to show Yohannes Buayalew in visibly poor health. That matched reports about conditions at the Awash Arba detention camp and Qilinto prison. However, newer posts have stripped away that context entirely. They use the image without attribution or date. Consequently, they falsely imply it is new evidence of the politicians’ current state.
A screenshot of the original post traces back to a Facebook account. MFC verified it as dating to December 2023. Presenting an old image as current constitutes misleading framing. Even if the original image itself is genuine, the presentation deceives viewers. Both politicians are real individuals. They have been in detention since August 2023. Both have faced documented health challenges.
Nevertheless, the specific images circulating on social media are misleading. Framed as current evidence, they do not constitute authentic proof of the politicians’ present condition. Therefore, readers should treat such viral images with extreme skepticism. Always verify the date and origin of any image before sharing. Use AI detection tools when visual anomalies appear.
