Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ethiopia

Gedion Timotheos has been serving as Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since his appointment on October 18, 2024. Prior to assuming this role, he held key positions as Attorney General, a position he took up on November 2, 2021, and Minister of Justice, which he assumed on October 6, 2021, before transitioning to his current role in 2024, with Hanna Araya-Selassie succeeding him as Minister of Justice.

Shuma was promoted from Maj. General to Lei. General in January 2022; and from Brig. General to Maj. Gedion’s career spans both government service and academia. Before becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs, he served as a legal expert, involved in various capacities. Notably, he was Assistant Professor and Head of the School of Law at Addis Ababa University and later became a Visiting Professor at Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, Hungary.

In addition to his teaching roles, Gedion has been involved in research and editorial work. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ethiopian Law and as a Senior Legal Advisor. His research led him to Indiana University’s Center for Constitutional Democracy, where he was a Visiting Scholar and Researcher in 2016. He also participated in the Constitution Building in Africa program at CEU, initially as Course Manager and later as Co-director.

Gedion holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Constitutional Law from CEU, which he completed in 2013/2014. He also earned an LL.M. in the same specialization in 2009 and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) with Great Distinction from Addis Ababa University in 2007.
