Tagesse Chafo (b. in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, Ethiopia) has been serving as Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives since 18 October 2018 and was re-elected to the position on 4 October 2021.

Tagesse holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Addis Ababa University, a Master of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture from AMU in India, and an MBA from OU Business School in the United Kingdom.

Before becoming House Speaker, Tagesse served as Minister for Public Service and Human Resource Development (2017–2018). He also held senior administrative roles in the SNNPR, including Vice President and Head of the Investment Commission and Bureau of Trade & Industry, and has participated in board leadership at universities and public enterprises.

He is a member of the Prosperity Party, previously affiliated with the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front and the Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement. As Speaker, his leadership focuses on legislative governance, institutional leadership, civil service reform, and regional development, and he actively represents Ethiopia in parliamentary activities and international conferences.
