Habtamu Itefa Geleta was appointed Minister of Water and Energy in October 2021, overseeing the development and management of Ethiopia’s water and energy resources, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project and expansion of renewable energy.
He holds multiple degrees in engineering a BSc (1999) and an MSc (2006) in Irrigation Engineering from Arba Minch University in Ethiopia, and a PhD in Hydraulic Engineering from Stuttgart University in Germany (2011).
His career includes leadership in water resource management, energy policy, and national infrastructure development. He has played a key role in coordinating energy projects, water resource planning, and sustainable energy initiatives.
As Minister of Water and Energy, Habtamu focuses on developing national water and energy infrastructure, expanding renewable energy, managing hydropower projects, and ensuring sustainable resource management to support economic development.
