Minister of Finance, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

Ahmed Shide (b. in Negele Borana, Ethiopia) has been serving as Minister of Finance since 16 October 2018, leading Ethiopia’s fiscal policy, economic reform agenda, and national budgeting processes.

He completed his education in economics and development studies both in Ethiopia and abroad. Ahmed holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the Ethiopian Civil Service College (Addis Ababa), a Master of Arts in Participation, Development and Social Change from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Managing Rural Resources and Resource Conflicts from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, the Netherlands, and an MBA from Greenwich University in the United Kingdom.

Ahmed’s public service career includes senior government leadership positions. Before his current role, he served as Minister of Transport (2017–2018) and Minister of Government Communication Affairs in 2018. Prior to ministerial roles, he worked as State Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development for more than eight years, where he played a key role in advancing economic cooperation, regional integration, and national reform programs. Earlier in his career, Ahmed also held leadership positions in regional government in the Somali Regional State, including roles in pastoral affairs, civil service improvement, and executive offices.

As Minister of Finance, Ahmed focuses on implementing economic reforms, enhancing fiscal management, promoting private sector participation, and strengthening national revenue and public investment frameworks to support Ethiopia’s development goals.
