Adanech Abiebie, (b. in Arsi, Oromia, Ethiopia) was appointed Mayor of Addis Ababa in September 2021, becoming the 32nd Mayor and the first woman to hold this position since its establishment in 1910.

Adanech’s career spans education, law, and public administration. She began as an elementary school teacher and later served as an attorney at the Oromia Justice Bureau. She holds a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) from the Ethiopian Civil Service University in 2001 and completed a graduate leadership program at Greenwich University in the United Kingdom.

Her political and administrative career progressed through several leadership roles. She was elected to the House of Peoples’ Representatives in 2005, served as Director of the Oromia Development Association, and was Mayor of Adama. From 2018 to 2020, she served as Minister of Revenue and Customs Authority, followed by her appointment as Federal Attorney General from March to August 2020. She then became Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa from August 2020 until her election as Mayor.

As Mayor, Adanech has focused on urban governance, anti-corruption, infrastructure development, and social service delivery. Her administration has also prioritized investment in education and urban planning initiatives, aiming to modernize the city and improve the quality of life for its residents.
