Gedion Timotheos has been serving as Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since his appointment on October 18, 2024. Prior to assuming this role, he held key positions as Attorney General, a position he took up on November 2, 2021, and Minister of Justice, which he assumed on October 6, 2021, before transitioning to his current role in 2024, with Hanna Araya-Selassie succeeding him as Minister of Justice.
Gedion’s career spans both government service and academia. Before becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs, he served as a legal expert, involved in various capacities. Notably, he was Assistant Professor and Head of the School of Law at Addis Ababa University and later became a Visiting Professor at Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, Hungary.
In addition to his teaching roles, Gedion has been involved in research and editorial work. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ethiopian Law and as a Senior Legal Advisor. His research led him to Indiana University’s Center for Constitutional Democracy, where he was a Visiting Scholar and Researcher in 2016. He also participated in the Constitution Building in Africa program at CEU, initially as Course Manager and later as Co-director.
Gedion holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Constitutional Law from CEU, which he completed in 2013/2014. He also earned an LL.M. in the same specialization in 2009 and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) with Great Distinction from Addis Ababa University in 2007.
