Taye Asteke-Selasie Amde

President, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia:

Taye Atske-Selassie Amde has served as the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia since October 7, 2024, succeeding former President Sahle-Work Zewde.

Born on January 13, 1956, in Debark, Northern Gondar, Amhara Regional State, President Taye has had a distinguished career in diplomacy and international relations. He began his professional journey at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he held various roles, including advisory positions in the European Department.

From 2018, he served as Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a position he held until his appointment as Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister with ministerial rank on January 18, 2023. His diplomatic career spans over three decades, during which he represented Ethiopia in numerous international forums. Prior to his UN role, he held strategic diplomatic positions, including Consul General of Ethiopia in Los Angeles, and assignments in Washington, D.C., Stockholm, and as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Egypt.

On February 8, 2024, President Taye was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, succeeding Demeke Mekonnen, who resigned on January 26, 2024.

He holds postgraduate degrees in Political Science, International Relations, and Strategic Studies from Addis Ababa University and Lancaster University, England.
