Director General, National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS)

Redwan Hussien (b. 22 September 1971, Siltie, Ethiopia) is an Ethiopian politician serving as Director General of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) since 8 February 2024, after being appointed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and confirmed by the House of Peoples’ Representatives.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Addis Ababa University in 1995 and a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University in 2006. Following his studies, Redwan taught biology at secondary schools before entering public service.

Redwan has held various significant government positions, including Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa (2011–2013), Minister of Communication (2013–2015), Minister of Youth and Sports (2015–2018), and Ethiopian Ambassador to Eritrea (2018–2019). He also served as National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister from June 2022 until his appointment as Director General of NISS in 2024.

As Director General, Redwan leads Ethiopia’s intelligence and security operations, focusing on national security strategies, regional cooperation, and counterterrorism initiatives. His leadership has strengthened intelligence collaboration with neighboring countries, advancing Ethiopia’s goals of peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
