Debretsion Gebremichael is the President of Tigray Regional State from Jan 2018 – Nov 2020, and from July 2021 to date.
Debretsion has a BSc and MSc in Electrical Engineering from Addis Ababa University. He has also a PhD in Information Technology from Capella University.
Debretsion is the Chairman of Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) since 2017. In 2018, he was appointed to lead the Region with the rank of Deputy President of Tigray Regional State replacing the former president Abay Woldu.
In September 2020, he was appointed as President by the Regional Council following the September 2020 election held in the Region. In the November 2020 Tigray War, Debretsion and his administration was ousted from power when the Ethiopian Federal Government forces controlled the Regional capital, Mekelle. He was then reinstated to the position in July 2021 after Tigray Defense Forces recaptured Mekelle and pushed out the Ethiopian Federal Government forces from much of the Region.
Prior to assuming his current Regional position, Debretsion had served in various positions at Federal level. He was once the Minister of Communications and Information Technology; Deputy Prime Minister for Finance and Economic Clusters; and Board Chair of Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation.
