Getahun Mekuria was the Minister of Education January 2020 m- October 2021. He was also the Minister of Science and Technology (renamed in 2018 as Innovation and Technology) from 2016 -2020.

Getahun has BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering from Addis Ababa University. He has a PhD the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany.

Getahun was the faculty member the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Addis Ababa University from 2008-2012. In 2012 he was also the Deputy Scientific Director at Addis Ababa Institute of Technology
